Petr Czech - the ball was wet!

The great Petr Czech, looking here more like an incarnation of Arnold Scharznegger although Terminated is more the case than Terminator. He had an explanation for dropping the ball. He had an explanation for dropping the ball. "It was wet!"
Although pre-tournament there was a lot of discussion among keepers as to the aerodynamics of this ball and fears that long range shots would curl and dip. Michael Ballack showed that was possible for the Germans putting the Austrians out last night with a 35 yard screamer from a free kick, but largely goals have not come that way. Czech explained that he had tried to catch the ball and fluffed it when he should have punched it. All of which might not have mattered if the Turks had not also banged another two quick goals past him to pinch a slot against a Croatia team that are growing in confidence and self esteem under a mix of Slaven Bilic's shrewd management and some naked patrioism.

Oh no, no. no. no (part two)

John Terry may not be the most nimble goalscorer in the pack but if you had to pick one player to score a penalty to win the European Cup you might well fancy him to be your man...wrong. The dodgy Moscow pitch did for him at last. Shades of David Beckham. The ball sails harmlessly wide

Oh, no, no, no, no (part one)

The luminescent Petr Czech goes the wrong way. The orange kit is supposedly scientifically proven to make him seen bigger, in whcih case you might fancy a bet on Holland to win the Euro 2008

Frank Lampard equalises

Part of the success of Chelsea this year has been their tactic of playing quickly and really getting into opponents before they are ready,

often with huge kicks from Petr Czech. Here it was Essien charging from right back and letting loose a vicious forty yarder which picks up a deflection and falls into the on running Frank Lampard's path. Edwin and Rio look well horrified.

That wonderful leap

It was an amazing leap and a precision accurate header. The redoutable Michael Essien is dwarfed by the jump and sinking in the dodgy Moscow turf. Carlos Tevez menacingly cruises the penalty spot like a mad dog looking for scraps

Who said I could not do it on the big stage

Cristian Ronaldo leaps for joy after his perfect lazer header puts United ahead

Night the gods shone on Manchester

Manchester United turn Moscow into tinseltown after their epic encounter with Chelsea. The luck was with them but in the first half they showed some champagne football that has made them so admired.
